ASHRAE Spain Chapter | Technical Hour with ITALSAN
September 22 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The ASHRAE Spain Chapter | Technical Hour is an initiative inspired by the online format of ASHRAE Tech Hour, aimed at sharing high-level technical knowledge in the fields of HVAC, refrigeration, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
In this fourth edition, we will be joined by Italsan to discuss water quality in closed-loop systems and data centers.
Water quality in closed-loop systems is a critical factor in ensuring the efficiency, reliability, and durability of HVAC installations. The presence of dissolved oxygen, salts, solids, construction-related contaminants, uncontrolled make-up water, material incompatibilities, or inadequate water treatment can lead to corrosion, scaling, sedimentation, biofouling, reduced heat transfer efficiency, increased pressure drops, and a shorter service life for both equipment and piping systems.
This issue becomes even more critical in Data Centers, particularly with the increasing adoption of liquid cooling architectures, where it is essential to distinguish between the Facility Water System (FWS) and the Technology Cooling System (TCS), as well as to understand their different requirements regarding fluid quality, material compatibility, cleanliness, filtration, and operational control.
ASHRAE TC 9.9 specifically identifies this separation of water-quality domains as one of the key considerations for the proper deployment of systems incorporating Cooling Distribution Units (CDUs) and highlights that TCS requirements are more stringent than those of the FWS.
The proposed session will take a strictly technical and educational approach, addressing the most common degradation mechanisms in closed-loop systems, the application framework of VDI 2035 and VDI 6044, and the design, commissioning, monitoring, and operational criteria required to minimize issues and optimize performance in both HVAC installations and mission-critical environments such as data centers.
